I never thought I'd find a vegan version of this dish! 锅包肉 Guō bāo ròu is a variation of sweet and sour pork from the Northeastern region of China, and an absolute MUST-EAT! Don't worry, you don't need to break vegan to try it because I found a vegan version made from oyster mushrooms. The texture is actually so meaty that I would challenge meat-eaters to try and let me know if they can tell the difference! The mushrooms have been pressed to release the water, then dipped in a batter and deep fried. They're then coated in a delicious orange-ginger sweet and sour glaze that manages to be both comforting and elevated. I would definitely come back to Harbin just for this dish! Other dishes mentioned: 酸菜炖粉条 Suāncài dùn fěntiáo - Pickled cabbage stew. I recommend adding vinegar if you want it extra sour! 素馅儿饼 Sù xiàn er bǐng - Vegan meat-stuffed pancake. New China Bucket List Item! ✅ I am kind of a morning person...but not a "out of the house dressed and ready before 7 am" kind of morning person. But Dongbei markets start at 4am, and the vendors' energy is so contagious it could almost replace my coffee. And while people say that Chinese street vendors are just after your money, that's just NOT the case in Dongbei! I was FLOORED by the generosity. People kept handing me samples left and right, but all they wanted in return was to know if I liked it! Of course, I did end up buying some things, and that's when I got my second surprise: the prices! 1.5 yuan ($0.20 USD) for a stuffed pastry-pancake bigger than my face. 9 yuan ($1.30 USD) for a whole kilo of mangosteen. 3.5 yuan ($0.50 USD) for a bag of delicious tofu skin snacks. 7 years into this vegan in China treasure hunt thing, I still get caught off guard by mornings like this. I could eat this everyday! 😋 麻辣烫 Málà tàng (literally mouth numbing spicy soup) is one of my favourite Chinese dishes. Originally from Sichuan, it has made its way to Northeastern China where it has been reinvented with the addition of creamy sesame-peanut paste to soften the spice and add an irresistible creaminess. Most of the time your ingredients are boiled in a bone broth, but I happened to come across this pure vegan restaurant in Harbin. Lucky me, it had only opened a week before I arrived, so if you're in Harbin go show the new vegan business some love! 素食麻辣烫 Sùshí málà tàng 📍哈尔滨 - 分部街66-4号 (Fenbu street on Amap, look for n. 66) If you're craving a Malatang but can't find a vegan place, try to find one that can boil your ingredients in a fresh pot of water. Some places boil ingredients in a communal pot, but others can do individual, it really just depends on the size of the shop. 🐰 Rabbit food I will happily eat! 🤤 🥗 凉拌菜 Liángbàn cài (Tr. Cold tossed vegetables) is a mixture of colours, textures and flavours. No bite is the same! 😋 The way it works is you'll have a million (only slight exaggeration) different vegetables🥦🥕, proteins (plenty of tofu and seitains🫘 😁 ), noodles🍜 and other ingredients to choose from, then they'll mix it up with a dressing. Typically it's possible to be made vegan-friendly (soy sauce, garlic, vinegar, chilli oil and sometimes sesame sauce), but ask for no chicken powder (不要鸡精Bùyào jījīng🚫 🐤 ). This was not the Shenzhen I expected! 🫢 Whenever I see this city pop up online, it's all robots, drone deliveries and "China is living in 2050" storylines. But as someone who is admittedly skeptical about AI and all this new tech, I was kind of nervous to see Shenzhen for myself. And yes, robots are leading some of the Ayi dance troups, but there's another side to the city I wish was promoted more. Like the Futian Mangrove Ecological Park that is home to thousands of protected species, provides a stopover for migratory birds, and helps regulate the climate by storing carbon. As a vegan, I especially appreciated the strict rules around interacting with nature. It's a rare example of a proper sanctuary for wildlife. 😠 You CAN'T be vegan in China! I've been told that so many times. Before I came here. After I arrived. By both locals and people who have never taken a step into this country. But if you've watched my videos, I think it's safe to say I've proved you definitely can! 😋 That being said, it's not without challenges. There's not even really a word for vegan in Chinese 🙃 So to be invited to sit on a committee to promote Chinese culinary culture as a "vegan expert" is a big deal. I've been invited to these things before as a "foreign influencer" but this was the first time my specialty was recognized as an asset instead of a nuisance. 🫣 Unpopular opinion: I'm vegan, but I don't want to see that label on a menu. Here's the thing: "vegan" as a word puts people off before they've even tasted anything. But what if instead of removing animal products from dishes to make them vegan, we let people opt IN to adding meat, egg or cheese for an additional cost? 🤔 Turns out the science backs this up! When plant-based is the default, people choose it roughly 3x more often than when meat is the default. Not because they were convinced. Not because they were shamed. Just because it was the easier choice. And when the easier choice also happens to be better for animals and the planet? Love it! 🥳 Here's what I also love – it's the most inclusive way to design a menu. Vegans, vegetarians, people who keep halal or kosher, anyone who's lactose intolerant (which is most of the world, by the way)... everyone can just eat without having to negotiate with the menu.
